Work with Children
"I really enjoyed working with the Children’s Program. Eventually, I would like to become a teacher. [Staff] wanted to be sure that I had a positive experience with their organization and as a result, this is exactly what I have experienced."
Kristy, University of Oregon Sociology intern
"Make Parenting A Pleasure has by far been my favorite program. This program provides parent education to a group of families over a nine month time period. This is helpful in providing adequate time to develop a trust relationship with the parents. I have been very active in this group and this has been the best aspect of the practicum. The parent educator has modeled to me how to be with others including children and the parents that we interact with. I have observed how to lead a group discussion and how to manage a large group under a time strain. I have also learned how to better listen and respond to parents and their needs through observing the parent educator successfully do this. I have developed parent education skills that I was looking for in the internship."
Robin, University of Oregon Family and Human Services intern
"My observation, listening and communication skills were put to the test….I learned a great deal about life span development."
Kelly, University of Oregon Family and Human Services intern, 2003-04
"My experience here has not only enhanced my resume, but more importantly enhanced my experience working directly to empower parents and families. Interning with Healthy Start has increased my ability to find positive features and factors within families that are seemingly hopeless. I feel proud to have been part of such an amazing…program."
Anna, University of Oregon student volunteer
"I really enjoyed being able to observe different family structures, different parenting styles, and different stages of development in each infant. Though the infants were all relatively the same age, they are were developing at different paces—and it was neat to observe that."
JoAnne, University of Oregon student volunteer
"I began my volunteer service for Birth To Three during a divorce from a thirty-year marriage. I needed something different from the daily routine to look forward to…. the kids were wonderful [and] so were the staff and volunteers! Reading books to the children, soothing a baby …, having a tea party…. relieved much of my stress [and] gave me something to look forward to and provided an important service to the community."
