Q: Why do people need help with parenting? Doesn’t it come naturally?

A: For most new parents, a baby changes their lives dramatically. Most parents want to do a good job raising their children, yet not all parents know how or have the support they need. New parents may feel isolated and frustrated about their abilities or just want to share the excitement of the daily pout.jpgchanges in their lives with someone who understands. Parenting is the most important, challenging, and rewarding job most people will ever have and positive parenting skills can be learned. Most parents find it very helpful to become part of a supportive Birth To Three group where they can learn about child development and share information with other new parents. As an added bonus, most Birth To Three groups remain friends for years! In a recent Birth To Three survey, 100 percent of the parents who participated said they would recommend Birth To Three to a friend, and 97 percent said it helped them become a better parent.

Q: Are there Birth To Three organizations all over the country?

A: Birth To Three was born in Eugene-Springfield and serves our local community. We have not expanded our services outside of Lane County. However, our curriculum is used at more that 800 sites in the U.S. and in 13 international locations. And, while there are Birth To Three organizations elsewhere that assist families when children have developmental disabilities, those groups are not associated with Birth To Three. We also know about a Birth To Three organization in Washington state -- again, it is not affiliated with us.

Q: How many families does Birth To Three serve?

A: Every year, close to 1,000 local parents and their children in Lane County, Oregon, participate in Birth To Three parenting groups and an additional 4,000 people connect with Birth To Three’s other programs and services. In more than 30 years, we estimate we have served about 88,000 parents and their children. Throughout the country—and the world—other organizations use Birth To Three curricula and reach thousands more families.
